BCHC PhD Students graduate

Last week, the BCHC had the pleasure of celebrating the graduation of three of our PhD students; Dr Flavia Occhibove, Dr Tom Gasan and Dr Chelsea Davies.

The focus of Flavia’s research project was “Observational and model evidence for and against the dilution effect: examples from pathogens and parasites of wild rodents”. Flavia was supervised by Dr Claire Risley.

Tom’s thesis was entitled “Characterisation of Schistosoma mansoni Larval Extracellular Vesicle protein 1 (SmLEV1) an immunogenic, schistosome- specific protein, exhibiting developmentally regulated alternative splicing“, which was supervised by Dr Iain Chalmers.

Since completing his PhD, Tom has relocated to Leiden where he is working as a Post-doctoral researcher at the Leiden University Medical Center under Dr Hermelijn Smits.

Chelsea’s project focused on the “Functional Characterisation of Extracellular Vesicles from Fasciola hepatica”. She was supervised by Dr Russ Morphew. Since completing her PhD, Chelsea has stayed at Aberystwyth University and is now working with Dr Hefin Williams on a PreciseAg project which focuses on precision livestock farming for a sustainable Welsh agricultural industry and is funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales – HEFCW.

Congratulations Flavia, Tom and Chelsea!!
