Over the past two weeks, members of the Hoffmann research lab have welcomed Dr. Moses Egesa for two weeks of intensive training. Dr. Egesa is a research fellow with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), a Senior Research Officer at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and a Senior Scientist at both institutions. This knowledge exchange was funded as part of an International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF)/Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) grant developing training opportunities and research techniques for the benefit of Uganda.
During his stay, Moses has learned techniques associated with the maintenance of the S. mansoni lifecycle, in-vitro culture technologies, parasite scoring for drug screening, molecular techniques and tools for micrography analysis. His insights into the research in Uganda as an endemic area have also been invaluable for the Hoffmann team, generating many ideas for projects that could drive S. mansoni research in the future.
Moses also presented his work to the broader Parasitology and Infectious Diseases cohort at his presentation titled “Establishing a single sex Schistsoma mansoni controlled human infection model for Uganda”, where he described his pioneering work establishing a non-endemic laboratory line of S. mansoni in Uganda, the requirements for improvements to local infrastructure and technical capacity, and some of the challenges experienced along the way.
We hope that Moses has found this exchange valuable and look forward to collaborating with him on projects in the future.
