BCHC members engage in Science Week

This week, members of the BCHC participated in British Science Week, an engagement event delivering practical STEM demonstrations to local school children in years 5 – 7. This year’s theme was ‘Change and Adapt’; you can learn more about the principles of British Science Week through their website.

This year, BCHC’s stall incorporated a ‘World of Parasites’ tent, in which attendees were shown preserved samples of a range of veterinary and human parasites. From there, they were given the opportunity to observe the effects of drug exposure on Panagrellus redivivus motility in real time.

Also in attendance were the signature mascots of the BCHC: the giant plush Schistosoma mansoni pair Bonnie and Clyde; the iconic fluke throne and ‘Tiny’ the tapeworm, who rolls out to the representative length of a real adult tapeworm.

BCHC thanks the organisers of Science Week at Aberystwyth University, as well as our members who worked exceptionally hard to put together the stalls and make the event engaging for students. Thanks also to the student volunteers who were essential in keeping the stall afloat throughout the week.

Scientific outreach is a core value at the BCHC and Aberystwyth University as a whole. If you would like to discuss an outreach event outside of Science Week, please contact a member of our team or visit the AU webpage for outreach activities.
