The Barrett Centre for Helminth Control is honoured to be shortlisted as a finalist for the St David Awards 2026.
The scheme run by the Welsh Government recognises people who are making a real difference for Wales, both at home and abroad.
The BCHC has been nominated due to our innovation in parasite research of Schistosomiasis and Fasciolosis, including groundbreaking environmental DNA detection methods and novel approaches for identifying vaccine and drug candidates. This research is instrumental in tackling persistent health and food security issues in Wales and around the world.
Karl F. Hoffmann, Director of the BCHC: “We are incredibly proud to have been shortlisted as finalists in the Innovation, Science and Technology category of the St David’s Awards 2026. It is an incredible testament to the hard work, dedication and continued commitment of our staff and students to be honored in this manner. The work being done in the centre is directly relevant to improving the lives of animals and humans as well safeguarding the economy of agriculture and farming practices. While these activities obviously have benefits to Wales, the impact of our work has global implications and is absolutely critical to solving some of the most pressing problems in veterinary sciences, biomedicine and agriculture. We look forward to celebrating our nomination with the rest of the finalists at the St David’s Award ceremony in February.”

Massive congratulations to all involved in the Department of Life Sciences at Aberystwyth University.
