The Life Sciences Research Network Wales (LSRNW) is a cross-Wales initiative that supports World Class Science within Wales to develop new therapeutic treatments in areas of unmet medical and veterinary need. The Network is led by Cardiff University and brings together research expertise in the Life Sciences from across Wales including from Aberystwyth, Bangor and Swansea Universities.
The Network forms part of the Welsh Government’s Sêr Cymru program and is part funded by a £7.3M award, 70% Welsh Government and 30% HEFCW. Sêr Cymru aims to build upon and enhance research in Wales, in line with the objectives of Science for Wales, the Welsh Government’s strategic agenda for science and innovation in Wales.
In order to boost activity in the area of drug discovery and promote cross-Welsh HEI collaboration the Network has funded a number of platform projects across its range of activity. Roboworm, the automated high-content imaging platform located at Aberystwyth University is one of those platforms.
The LSRNW has also facilitated collaborations between Aberystwyth University with both Bangor and Cardiff Universities in order to enable objective repositioning of existing drugs and the identification of new compounds as next-generation anthelmintics.
A series of promotional videos highlighting the successes of the LSRNW, and showcasing key projects have just been released. Aberystwyth University and the work conducted by Prof. Karl Hoffmann’s group to develop new anthelmintics features in these videos.
