Viva Success for Dr Jacob Leonard

Congratulations to Dr. Jacob Leonard who successfully defended his thesis  ‘Always Go with Your Gut: Exploring Antimicrobial Activity of Rumen Fluke Extracellular Vesicles and Peptides’ on 23rd  October 2026.

Many thanks to the examiners, Dr Katie Smith from Cardiff University and Prof. Gareth Griffith (Aberystwyth) as well as Dr Niall McKeown (Aberystwyth) for chairing. Dr Russ Morphew supervised Jacob, alongside Prof. Peter Brophy, and Jacob was funded by a Food Biosystems DTP PhD studentship at Aberystwyth University.

Jacob said ‘Thank you to Dr. Katie Smith and Dr. Gareth Griffiths for being a great panel, and Dr. Niall Mckeown as an excellent and welcoming chair person. Thank you to my Supervisor Dr. Russ Morphew who helped me through all the tough times, and got me to the end of the road. I look forward to publishing my work, and continuing my career in science.’

Dr Russ Morphew said ‘I’m extremely proud to have been able to support Jacob in his career to this point. It’s been an honour to help him grow as a scientist through both fun and challenging times. He has produced some excellent results during his PhD which will help us understand rumen fluke infections in the host. As supervisors, Peter and I are immensely proud of what he has achieved.’
