On June 10-11, Dr. Jo Forde Thomas, Dr. Sarah Davey and Prof Karl Hoffmann visited Geneva, Switzerland to finalise a new collaboration with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi).
After an entire day of sharing activities and priorities for the future, the BCHC was asked to be one of a small handful of centres to screen a schistosomiasis compound box comprised of ~ 100 carefully-selected compounds with diverse in vitro and in vivo characteristics. The aim of this schistosomiasis community exercise is to facilitate a better understanding of how different laboratories conduct in vitro screening of schistosome parasites. Harmonised results will subsequently pave the way for an advanced understanding of clinically relevant features for progression down the schistosomiasis drug discovery pipeline.
Prof Hoffmann, Director of the BCHC commented:

As we have some of the most sophisticated drug discovery platforms available, our results will help create harmonised standards for quantifying in vitro efficacy criteria of anti-schistosomal compounds.”
